We all have minor skin problems from time to time, like
hormonal breakouts to dry skin, rough skin or oily skin leading to small
pimples. All these usually get treated at home using some home remedies. But
there are some problems should be better treated by a dermatologist and should
not be taken lightly. Even after getting some remedies at home to treat your
skin concerns, if the problem still persists, they can have a huge impact on
someone’s self-confidence and mental health.
Acnes and Psoriasis have been considered to be such skin
problems which leads to depression and affects mental health. If acnes are not
treated on time and if they still continue to become cystic acne and adult
acne, they leave scars on the skin making it even more badly. Treating this by
self will not get any outcome but will only lead to frustration and depression
making the skin even more problematic. It is always better to get your skin
consultation from a dermatologist.
Choosing the right dermatologist is an important and personal
decision, especially if you have a skin concern. Many people make sure they
don’t take the risk with their skin and visit a skin doctor but end up with zero
results or even more problematic skin. Choosing the right dermatologist is very
important to get the right treatment. Before choosing a dermatologist,
understand your skin concern first. Also, know that there are two types of skin
doctors, general and cosmetic. And, choosing the right derm is crucial to
addressing your concerns.
How to find the right
one?
· The types:
There are two types of general and cosmetic. A general
dermatologist will treat rashes, acne, etc. They will usually do a skin
examination and ask about normal problems about the moles, thinning hair, brown
spots, and wrinkles. A general dermatologist usually gives topical treatments like
Retin-A for pimples and wrinkles. Whereas, if your problems are big enough like
deep acne scars, consistent discoloration, heavy wrinkles and requires a
chemical peel, injections or laser; that’s where a Cosmetologist comes into the picture.
· Look for Recommendations:
You can ask your friends, family, and relatives for
recommendations. Also, your colleges would help in recommending dermatologists
at your workplace. Please do not refer the reviews which are almost
misleading. Nowadays reviews are paid reviews which don’t give the right
information about the doctors. Make a list of doctors depending on the
recommendations made only by people you know.
· Look for their Biography:
If you have found a handful of dermatologists, now is the time
to check for their degrees and biography which is usually posted on their
website. By doing this you will have a better idea about the doctor’s
specialty. Also, look for doctor’s Board Certification in Dermatology. These
points will help you understand deeply that which doctor specializes in
treating acne or skin cancer. Depending on your pressurizing problem you can
select a doctor who specializes in treating your concerned problem.
· Make an Appointment:
Find out the numbers, address, and timings from their web
page and make an appointment. Select a Monday or a Tuesday for an appointment.
These are the busiest days of the week and doctors usually have a lot of
patients these days. Take good advantage of the huge waiting line of
patients and interact with them about the doctor’s service and consultation.
Ask more about how the doctor is with his patients. Ask about their personal
experience with the doctor.
· Talk less and listen more:
When you finally meet your dermatologist try to talk less
and listen to what he/she is saying. Like for example, talk very little about a
small issue you have with your skin and listen up to what he/she says. Don’t
speak in detail about your problem. See how they would address your problem,
what kind of treatment they suggest, how aggressive the treatment would be etc.
This will give you a good idea of their opinion.
